Get It Right the First Time

When I was a freshman in college Billy Joel released “Get It Right the First Time.” Back then I thought he was just talking about getting the courage to talk to women, but now I realize the lyrics in the song are applicable even to business…

I don't believe in first impressions
For just this once I hope that looks don't deceive…
…I've gotta get it right the first time
That's the main thing
I can't afford to let it pass
You get it right the next time that's not the same thing
Gonna have to make the first time last.”

My daughter’s blog last week about dressing properly to make the right first impression got me thinking about how important first impressions truly are.

The big question is how are you ultimately going to meet someone? Beyond just how you look, don’t you think that who introduces you/the way you’re introduced is important?

People have the potential to know a lot about you if you are introduced properly. You have to be careful.  Make sure you have the appropriate person and place when you’re trying to meet someone. Getting acquainted with someone through a mutual connection can be detrimental just as often as it is helpful.

So my advice: choose wisely.

Figure out who your most reliable connections are and ask yourself, “Can I trust this person with my reputation?”

You’ve got one shot at a first impression, so get it right the first time.
