I think a lot of people confuse the concepts of destination and transportation. Life is a journey, and almost everything we do along the way is transportation.
For instance, we don’t end up marrying most of the people we date in our lives.
However, once you do marry, it will work because you experienced - and learned from - those prior relationships. Each relationship prepares you for – and brings you closer to - the one that will last.
The same thing goes with your career. A lot of very smart young people pop out of college thinking that because they have a great idea, or certain exceptional talents, they should be running a company. But there are a ton of other things you must learn about life and business before you can effectively manage people and handle the countless other responsibilities that go into running a company.
Today’s part-time, or lower level job might not satisfy any career goals for those kinds of people. But it’s not supposed to. It’s supposed to teach you skills and give you experience that will bring you closer to being able to fulfill your career goal. It’s transportation. It’s a very necessary step along the way.
For me, I will never forget my years growing Steiner. It went from a little agency into a global sports memorabilia/marketing powerhouse. While I am no longer with the company, my experience led me to greener pastures. I learned what worked, and what didn’t work, and am implementing the positives at CollectibleXchange.
The bottom line is that every opportunity leads to something else. The more you commit yourself to each piece of transportation, the harder you work at it while you’re in it, the further it will take you. You’ll see – it all connects in the end.
